CAROLINGIAN VILLAGE

Open from April 15th to September 30th 2023

Carolingian village 700 to 900 AD WARCH

Presentation of the banner
The banner represents an eagle: The eagle was the bird of Zeus and later of Jupiter, patron saint of Rome, and was used by the Barbarians as a symbol of the Supreme Being. There is evidence that Charlemagne used it at the top of the mast of his ships (Quentovic's denarius, after 804) and put a bronze image above his palace in Aix.

Historical note on the period:
Some great names in history have marked this period, Charles Martel stopping the Arab invasion in Poitiers, Pepin the Short, the first king to be crowned and especially Charlemagne crowned emperor in 800. We will remember from this period the installation of a powerful administrative organization with the creation of prefects; the will to educate children in monasteries. It is also the time of the Viking raids which went up the rivers to plunder the abbeys.

Presentation of habitats
In Montcornet, you will find two important representations of this age, the primitive chapel and the house of the 4 sons Aymon.

Early Chapel: It is the beginning of the Christianization in depth in the Ardennes, it is then forbidden to put anything in the grave of the deceased. The chapel has an apse (a rounded shape that determines the choir), a stone basement, the mortar is reused; the building is well cared for in terms of architecture. There is a beautiful paving, the top of the openings is rounded (premices of the Romanesque art). You can admire the one and only Carolingian stained glass window in the world !
Murals will be put on the walls with the old method "afresco".

The house of the 4 sons Aymon: The house named after the 4 Aymon sons symbolizes the Ardennes legend of the 4 brothers pursued with determination by the emperor Charlemagne. Funerary structure and Viking camp: This place symbolizes the remains of a chapel burned by the Vikings. The funerary structure in its center has a specifically Christian meaning in the minds of the Carolingian clerics. The tomb appears in all the writings as a place of rest, a call to prayer and a support for remembrance all at the same time.
